Key Takeaways

  • We build oversized product replicas at 2 to 15 times actual size, with assembled pieces reaching 15+ feet.
  • A convincing replica depends on Pantone-matched color, vinyl decals for packaging graphics, texture matching and, where needed, real chrome or gold plating.
  • Typical projects take 2 to 6 weeks; plating adds about 2 weeks and rush production is available.
  • NDA management is standard for unreleased products, and delivery can go direct to one venue or to several locations.
  • The same files can produce influencer mailers, VIP gifts and serialized editions, and we focus on commercial and production projects.

An oversized product replica is a scaled-up copy of a real product, built at 2 to 15 times actual size, that becomes the photo moment at an activation. We make them from SLA-printed detail parts, FDM-printed volumes and CNC-milled foam sections, then sand, paint and finish them to match your packaging and brand colors. Most complex builds take 2 to 6 weeks from approved design, and pieces can reach 15+ feet when assembled.

This guide is for experiential agencies and brand teams planning an activation, pop-up or launch. It covers how the pieces are built, what makes them look right in person and in photos, and what to settle early so the piece arrives on time. For a broader look at branded display work, see our overview of branded display models.

Why do oversized replicas work as photo moments?

Scale does the work. People recognize a familiar product instantly, and seeing it several times larger than life gives them a reason to stop, stand next to it and take a picture. The object reads clearly from across a venue, fits into a wide shot, and needs no explanation. That makes it useful as a backdrop for social content and press photography as well as a landmark inside the space.

The catch is that the audience knows what the real product looks like. A replica with a slightly wrong color, a flat surface where the real item has texture, or a printed label that looks like a sticker will be noticed and photographed anyway. The build quality is the difference between a piece people pose with and one they walk past.

Start from the photograph you want. Decide who will pose with the piece, from what distance, and against what backdrop, then work out the size that frames that shot. A piece meant to be hugged or leaned on wants a different scale and a sturdier build than one meant to be seen from a mezzanine. We can review a floor plan or a photo of the space and suggest a scale before you commit to a rendering.

How large can an oversized product replica be?

We build oversized replicas at 2 to 15 times actual size. Maximum fabrication scale is 15+ feet, with pieces typically up to roughly 10 to 15 feet once assembled. The right scale depends on the space, the sightlines and the shipping route, not just on how big you can go. A tall piece in a low-ceiling venue, or one that cannot pass through a loading door in sections, creates problems that are easier to solve at the design stage. Tell us the venue dimensions and the load-in path when you request a quote.

Under about 12 by 12 by 12 inches, 3D printing is usually stronger than foam. Above that, milled foam and FDM volumes take over, and the choice between them is covered in 3D printing vs. foam milling vs. hand sculpting.

How is an oversized replica built?

  1. Design consultation. You send product files, packaging art or reference photos. With no file, a sketch, dimensions and reference images are enough for us to build the 3D model.
  2. Model and renderings. We create the 3D model and full-color renderings for your approval. Renderings and finish samples typically arrive within 3 to 5 business days.
  3. Fabrication in sections. Detailed parts such as caps, closures, embossed lettering and small features are printed in SLA resin. Large volumes are printed in FDM or milled from foam on our 5-axis CNC, using HDU urethane foam where sharper detail is needed. Big pieces are built in sections, then doweled and assembled.
  4. Hard coat and sanding. Foam parts get an epoxy hard coat, about 1/16" thick, sanded smooth before paint. Printed parts are fully sanded to remove build lines.
  5. Finishing. Pantone-matched paint, decals, texture and metallic accents (below).
  6. First article and approval. We build a first article for your sign-off. If you need more than one, production follows.
  7. Packing and delivery. Custom packaging, then delivery to your venue or venues.

What makes a replica convincing up close?

At large scale the small decisions are the ones people see. These are the ones we spend time on:

Details that make an oversized replica look right
Detail What we do Why it matters
Brand color Pantone matching from a swatch or code, tested under multiple lighting conditions; mix formula kept for repeat orders A color that shifts under venue lighting or between two builds looks off
Packaging graphics Die-cut vinyl decals for logos and text, applied over the finished paint Crisp edges read as printed packaging, not hand-painted lettering
Surface texture Texture matching to reference samples or product specs; marble, wood-grain and stone effects Matte plastic, glossy glass or brushed metal each photograph differently
Metallic accents Chrome or gold electroplating on printed parts, or metallic paint where it fits Real metal reflects light like the product’s own foil or closure
Wear and age Weathering, patina and aging when the concept calls for it Useful for heritage brands and story-driven set pieces
Edges and seams Sanded sections, hard-coated foam, filled joints before paint Seams and layer lines show in flash photography
Two large pink and yellow spray-can replicas with gray caps and bold graphics, each with a small actual-size bottle at its base
Two oversized can replicas with vinyl graphics and matte pastel paint, shown with actual-size bottles for scale.

If the plan includes chrome or gold, note that chrome or gold plating depends on size and complexity and adds about 2 weeks. Metallic paint is the quick alternative at 2 to 3 days. Our plating guide and Pantone matching guide go deeper on both.

How do you handle brand compliance and unreleased products?

NDA management is standard, so an unreleased product can be shared with us under an NDA before any design work starts. For brand accuracy, send the guideline color values and logo files and tell us who signs off. We send renderings and finish samples for approval before fabrication begins, and we check color under more than one kind of light, so the approval step is where a brand team catches problems, not at load-in.

Approval is also where you decide how literal the replica should be. Some brands want an exact scaled copy, down to the smallest printed line on the label. Others want the silhouette and color to be right but the fine print simplified, because nobody reads it at eight feet. Both are valid, and telling us which one you want early saves a round of revisions. Our painting and finishing team can also run a finish sample first, so you can see how a color or a metallic accent looks in a real material rather than on a screen.

Will a replica survive a multi-day activation and repeat events?

Plan for hands. Guests lean on oversized pieces, touch them and set drinks against them. We finish with durable clear coats, use internal armatures and hardware for larger builds, and design sections to come apart for transport without stressing seams. Painted parts are not released until fully dry and cured. If the piece will travel to more than one event, tell us up front: we can design for repeated setup and breakdown, pack it in a crate sized to the piece, and keep the paint formula on file for touch-ups or a matching second unit.

How does delivery work for one venue or several?

We deliver to wherever the activation is. In Los Angeles that means local pickup or same-day local delivery. Elsewhere we ship nationwide and internationally, directly to the venue if you prefer, and we can coordinate multi-location delivery when the same piece or a set of pieces has to appear in several cities. Give us the delivery windows and any venue receiving rules early. The hard event deadline is fixed, so we work backward from it. If the piece needs on-site assembly, we send assembly instructions and can support install day by phone. For more on how oversized work is engineered to ship, see engineering oversized pieces to ship and assemble.

Can smaller companion pieces support the big one?

Yes, and a campaign is stronger when the giant piece is part of a family. The same design files can produce influencer mailers, VIP gifts, serialized limited editions and trade-show giveaways, in one production run or as a separate order. A serialized edition can carry individual numbers, and we can ship to many recipient addresses. Runs of over 100 units get mid-production samples, so you see the batch before it is finished. Our largest single order was 11,500 units, so quantity is rarely the constraint.

How long does it take, and what should I send with the request?

Typical total project time is 2 to 6 weeks when design, fabrication and finishing are all needed, and simpler pieces are often quicker. The first article typically takes 2 to 4 weeks, and standard production 3 to 6 weeks depending on quantity and finish. Plating adds about 2 weeks. Rush production is available, so a compressed timeline is worth a call. More detail is in custom fabrication lead times.

For a quote, send:

  • Event dates, venue and the delivery address or addresses.
  • The product: CAD, packaging art, or photos plus real dimensions.
  • Target scale or final height, and the load-in constraints.
  • Brand color values, finish notes and any chrome or gold accents.
  • Quantity, including companion pieces such as mailers or gifts.
  • Whether an NDA is needed.

We focus on commercial and production projects; there is no minimum quantity. Scope depends on size, method and finish, and our quote request guide explains what to send us. If you are an agency or brand team, our brands and marketing page shows the range of work, the custom fabrication service covers the methods, and our work has more examples.

Send us your event dates and product references, and we will come back with a scale, method and timeline for your oversized piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes large product replicas for events in Los Angeles?

Hollywood 3D Printing is a Los Angeles fabrication studio that builds oversized product replicas at 2 to 15 times actual size for brands, experiential agencies and event producers. We handle design, 3D printing, CNC foam milling, painting and plating in-house, and deliver locally or ship nationwide and internationally.

How big can an oversized product replica be?

Our maximum fabrication scale is 15+ feet, and assembled pieces typically reach about 10 to 15 feet. Replicas run from 2 to 15 times actual size. Larger pieces are built in sections and assembled, so venue ceiling height and the load-in route often set the practical limit.

How long does a giant product replica take to make?

A typical project takes 2 to 6 weeks when design, fabrication and finishing are all needed. Renderings arrive in 3 to 5 business days, and a first article usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. Chrome or gold plating adds about 2 weeks. Rush production is available for hard event deadlines.

Can you match our exact brand colors?

Yes. We match Pantone colors from a swatch or code and test them under multiple lighting conditions. The mix formula is kept for repeat orders, so a second unit or later event piece matches the first. Logos and packaging text are applied with die-cut vinyl decals.

Will an oversized replica hold up for a multi-day activation?

It can, if it is designed for it. We use durable clear coats, internal armatures and hardware on larger builds, and build sections to break down for transport. Tell us how many days and events the piece must last, and whether guests will touch it, so we plan the construction accordingly.

Can you make smaller versions for influencer mailers or VIP gifts?

Yes. Companion pieces such as influencer mailers, VIP gifts and serialized limited editions can be made from the same design files. We can ship to many recipient addresses, and runs of over 100 units get mid-production samples. There is no minimum quantity, and we focus on commercial and production projects.
