Ron Howard's son Reed had the great idea of surprising his dad with a custom chess set comprised of unique pieces modeled after characters and relics from his films over the decades. Pretty thoughtful, right?
Based on a compilation of frame stills from his dad's filmography, Reed settled on the concept of Fiction vs. Non-Fiction, and we set out to design a full chess board of unique characters. You've got The Grinch, Tom Hanks from "Apollo 13," the mermaid from "Splash," the F-1 car from "Rush," and even the cocoon alien from -- you guessed it -- "Cocoon." Each piece was 3D Printed in High-Resolution Resin and then hand-painted in high detail.
After receiving this set, a second set was commissioned at 25% larger and instead of hand-painting, the pieces were metallic electroplated: one side Chrome, one side Gold.
